Western Kings defeat the St. John’s Privateers to claim the 2013 Major Midget Provincial Championship

The Coleman’s Western Kings overpowered the St. John’s Privateers to win the 2013 Major Midget AAA Provincial Crown.  The Kings finished the series in five games, winning by a score of 4-0 in the final game.

After the opening weekend in Corner Brook, the two teams were tied at one game a piece sending the series back to St. John’s for games three, four and five.  The Kings faced with a tough task of three road games in three days, but went on to win each game and finish the series off Sunday.

On their road to the Championship title the Kings defeated the Central Ice Pak in a tight series that went the distance to a seventh and deciding game.  The Privateers defeated the St. John’s Maple Leafs in four games to gain entry into the Championship series.

With the victory the Western Kings will now represent Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador at the 2013 Major Midget Atlantics in Moncton, NB – April 4th-7th. The winner of the Atlantics earns a berth in the Telus Cup, the National Midget Championship played this year in Sault Ste. Marie, ON – April 22nd-28th.

The Major Midget trophy wasn’t the only piece of hardware handed out to the Kings this past Sunday; forward Ian Skinner was presented with ‘Leagues Top Scorer’ trophy as well. The Major Midget Championship is the first for Western since the 1996-97 season.
