Immediate Release

March 28, 2016

Grand Falls-Windsor – the Grand Falls Windsor Senior Cataracts don’t have much time to celebrate after claiming the Herder Memorial Championships on Friday night.    This weekend the three-time defending Herder Champs will be taking on the Lameque Au P’tit Mousse Senior AAA team from New Brunswick in a short two (2) out of three (3) series at the friendly confines of the Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium in Grand Falls-Windsor.

This is a regional qualifier to see who will represent Atlantic Canada in the historic Allan Cup Championship being played from April 11-16, 2016 in Steinbach, Manitoba.

The Allan Cup is one of the oldest club-team hockey competitions in North America, having been first competed for in 1908.  Only once in the past 108 years, in 1945, has an Allan Cup champion not been crowned.

The Cataracts have had two recent appearances in the national championship coming close last year in Clarenville losing the semi-final game against the Bentley Generals in overtime.  In 2012 they got their first taste of Allan Cup under the new tournament format instituted in 1992.

The Central West Champions have bolstered their line-up this weekend with some additional players that didn’t play in the regular season as well as some affiliates from teams in the Central West League. The New Brunswick team gained their first experience last year in Clarenville and although they did not get through the quarter finals, they were very competitive.

Holding Seat Tickets for this weekend’s games will be available for purchase Monday and Tuesday evenings from 7-9pm at the Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium Box Office for seat-holders. The General Public can purchase tickets at the Stadium Box Office Thursday from 12-2pm and 7-9pm. Tickets for these games will NOT be available at other locations. All tickets are $20.

Game times are Friday, April 1st at 8:00 pm, Saturday April 2nd at 7:30 pm and if a third game is required, it will be played at 1:30 pm on Sunday, April 3rd.
