Kirk Johnson enjoyed a tremendous hockey career from minor through junior and senior. A strong, determined and talented forward, he provided exceptional leadership for every team for which he played and was a definite asset in a variety of successful competitions.

He played high school and minor hockey in his native Buchans and was the scoring champion for the Buchans Junior Team that won the 1973 Provincial Championship and the Veitch Trophy. When his family moved to Gander in 1974 he contributed greatly to Gander teams that won the 1974 and 1975 Veitch Trophy and was the scoring champion for both seasons. The 1975 Gander Junior Flyers won the Atlantic Championship and played in the Eastern Canadian semi finals.

His ten seasons in Provincial Senior Hockey began with Gander when he was called up from the Junior Flyers and played eight games. He was a member of the Senior Gander Club for seven seasons and also performed with St. John’s Capitals, Stephenville Jets, Port aux Basques Mariners and Corner Brook Royals.

Overall he competed in 213 games with 176 goals and 242 assists for 409 points while serving 519 penalty minutes. He ranks 24th in goals, 21st in assists, 24th in points and 13th in penalty minutes. His playoff totals included 59 goals, 58 assists and 117 points. His goals and points are eighth overall and his assists are good enough for 11th.

He has three Herder Memorial Trophies to his credit as Provincial Senior Champions with Gander in 1980, Stephenville in 1984 and Corner Brook in 1985. He was a member of three teams that represented Newfoundland and Labrador in National and Allan Cup competition, highlighted by a hat trick in the 1984 play-downs against Cambridge, Ontario. His Allan Cup totals are six goals, three assists, nine points and 10 penalty minutes.

He more than proved himself a winner in both junior and senior hockey and earned a reputation as an extremely successful clutch player who could score important goals for his team when necessary.
