During a 26 year period from 1976 to 2002 Frances Wiseman made valuable contributions and devoted plenty of time and effort to the betterment of hockey within Newfoundland and Labrador. This is especially true for minor and female hockey and the results of her work continue to assist the growth and improvement of hockey provincially.

She first became involved in hockey at the local minor level in St. John’s in 1976-77 when she helped organize the St. Paul’s Minor Hockey Association. From there she moved to the executive of St. John’s Minor Hockey and Christian Brothers Minor Hockey. She served in a variety of positions and on a wide range of committees.

Frances Wiseman was first elected to the provincial minor hockey executive in 1987-88 and progressed in several positions until she became the first female provincial minor hockey chair in 1990-91. She served in this position for five seasons, working especially for minor hockey but also filling a variety of other positions.

In 1988 season she joined the national female hockey council and did fine work within that group until 1995. Her contributions were especially valuable to provincial female hockey and she was deeply involved with Newfoundland and Labrador female teams for the Canada Winter Games.

From 1997 to 2002, Frances Wiseman served on the St. John’s Maple Leafs Foundation and the St. John’s Maple Leafs Booster Club as both organizations generated large amounts of money for charitable organizations.

Her many contributions, in a wide range of organizations, earned her the provincial Sports Executive of the Year Plaque for 1993. Added to this recognition were an extremely large number of citations and awards with national, provincial and local hockey, generally within minor hockey.

Overall, Frances Wiseman’s contributions to hockey were outstanding and have proven to be very valuable to the state of the sport within the province. In addition her work nationally has greatly benefited the province. She has been an excellent hockey personality.
