Hockey NL High Performance Program Summer Camp Concludes in Corner Brook 

Corner Brook, NL – The Hockey NL High Performance Program (HPP) summer camp in Corner Brook wrapped up earlier today. The summer camp saw close to 250 athletes and 65 staff participate, from August 2nd to August 10th. The summer camp was hosted out of the Corner Brook Civic Centre and the athletes were housed at the Grenfell campus residence.

The first portion of the camp took place from August 2nd to August 7th, with divisions in Male Under 14 (68 Players), Male Under 15 (46 Players), Female Under 16 (46 Players) and Female Under 18 (40 Players).  The second phase of the summer camp took place from August 7th to 10th which brought in the Male Under 16 division (45 Players).

Players participated in various off-ice sessions including;

  • Fitness Testing (Aerobic, Lower and Upper)
  • Nutrition/Hydration
  • Hydration Monitoring for optimal performance
  • Exercise Science & Athlete Development
  • Stretch & Movement
  • Female Hockey Options
  • Rest & Recovery
  • Over Training/Training Cycles
  • Sleep habits for athletes
  • Defensive/Offensive Tactics
  • Team Builders
  • Dressing room/stall management & set-up
  • Warm up pre-ice & Cool down post-ice

The on-ice practice sessions were themed with daily progression throughout each of the camps, some of themes included: Style of play, with a puck, without a puck, defence/forward practice, goaltender sessions, scoring/offence and small area games. Each division had a total of 5 practices and 4 games.

The camp featured special guests; Troy Ryan (Hockey Canada/Assistant Coach 2018 Canadian Women’s Olympic Team), Ryan was on site August 2nd – 7th assisting the Female Under 16 and Female Under 18 staff members with off-ice presentations and on-ice practices. Ryan Britt (Head Equipment Manager of the Saint John Sea Dogs) was on site from August 2nd – 7th to assist the Hockey NL trainers and also lend advice to our male and female athletes on how to manage your dressing room stall, dressing room etiquette and other tips he could offer from his Major Junior and National level experience.

A strength and conditioning coach was added to the 2018 HPP summer camp, this position was led by Jonathan Reid. Jon was on site from August 2nd to August 7th and his responsibilities included to lead fitness testing, presentations on athlete development/exercise science and assist players in proper movement/techniques during warm up and cool downs.

Each Hockey NL division staff consists of; Head Coach, 2 Assistant Coaches, Goaltender Coach, Director of Operations, Trainer, Support Trainer and Support Staff.

Twenty players (12F, 6D, 2G) in the Male Under 14, Male Under 15, Female Under 16 and Female Under 18 divisions will be selected to represent Hockey NL at the Atlantic Challenge Cup in Moncton, NB (October 4th – 8th). The Female Under 18 division will also use the summer camp as part of their selection process for the Team NL Canada Winter Games team, which competes in Red Deer, AB in February 2019.

The Male Under 16 players will also use the summer camp as part of their selection for the 2019 Canada Winter Games. The Male Under 16 group will compete in a pre-Canada Winter Games competition in Dartmouth, NS (September 27th –  September 30th).

Hockey NL officials also used the High-Performance Program to run a development camp (on and off-ice sessions) for officials in the province. The Officials Program of Excellence (OPOE) took place during the Male Under 16 camp. The OPOE welcomed 11 officials from across the province looking to pursue higher levels in officiating.
