On Sunday August 19th the Newfoundland and Labrador Senior Hockey League held it’s first player draft. The player draft was implemented this season as a means of providing parity for all league teams throughout the province. Nineteen players submitted their names for the draft of which 10 players were drafted. Gander started the draft by selecting first overall due to them being an expansion team. With this pick Gander selected Clifford Mugford, a forward from Gander. The first trade of the season took place during the second round of the draft, Grand Falls traded Steve Pearson, Ryan Penney and their second round pick to Gander for Ryan Graham and Brad Yetman.

The first draft was a success however teams are still looking to complete their rosters. Therefore there will be a second draft on September 14th. Any Newfoundland born player looking to play in the NLSHL this season must enter the draft.
