The arrival of Hugh (Red) Wadden in Buchans for the 1953 senior hockey season is one of the better things that has happened to the sport within Newfoundland and Labrador. As a player, he was outstanding and ranks with the best who ever competed for the Herder Memorial Trophy. As a leader, on and off the ice, he always demonstrated the manner in which the game should be played. As a volunteer executive, he has devoted a great deal of time and effort to improving and expanding hockey, especially in Buchans.

A tall, talented centre with great range, fine skating skills and an exceptional anticipation, Wadden was a standout performer in provincial senior hockey from 1953 to 1967. A member of two Herder Trophy winners, his contributions to the Miners was a key reason for their great record within senior hockey. He was colorful, often outspoken and always an attraction for fans at home and on the road. His five goals – two in overtime – in a 1959 game against Grand Falls stands out but, game in, game out, year in year out, Wadden scored many important goals for Buchans.

He came to Buchans after an excellent minor and junior career in Nova Scotia. In addition to his great play on the ice, Wadden spent two seasons as a playing-coach, three seasons as a bench coach, and 12 seasons as captain. Continually a contributor to his community, he has worked within Buchans minor and junior hockey, and represented the town at Newfoundland Amateur Hockey Association meetings. Provincially, he continues to serve on the adult hockey council, and displays an impressive common sense approach to hockey matters. A gifted playmaker who was effective defensively, he displayed great sense of humor at all times. A better than average snipe sailor in his younger days, Wadden was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame in 1983.
