Grand Falls-Windsor, NL – The 2019 Herder Memorial Championship will begin at the Jack Byrne Arena this coming Saturday night, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Torbay. The Southern Shore Breakers, winners of the East Coast Senior Hockey League (ECSHL) will be hosting the Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts – champions of the Central West Senior Hockey League (CWSHL). The Breakers swept the defending Herder champs – Clarenville Caribous to claim their league title, while the Cats ousted the first place Gander Flyers in six games to claim the CWSHL title. The teams played two inter-locking games this season in which the Cataracts won both games.
The best of seven series will continue on Sunday, April 7, 2019 with a matinee game at 2:00 pm in Torbay. The series will then shift to the Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium in Grand Falls-Windsor for games three, four and five next weekend, if necessary, beginning on Friday, April 12th. If the series is extended beyond the second weekend, games six and seven will be played in the CBS Arena in CBS on April 20 and 21.
The Herder Memorial Trophy was first presented by the Evening Telegram Limited in 1935 to honor the hockey playing Herder Family, who founded the Evening Telegram in 1879. The trophy is emblematic of the All Newfoundland Senior Hockey Championship. The Breakers make their first return to the Series since 2004, while the Cataracts last Herder was 2016. The Breakers have five championships, while the Cataracts have won the historic trophy fourteen times.
When the series opens this weekend, the Breakers will have the ability to dress three strengthening players from their league to enhance the competition.
