Grand Falls-Windsor, NL – The 2015 Herder Memorial Championship brought to you by the Telegram opens tomorrow night 8:30 pm at the Civic Centre in Corner Brook and will feature the defending champions, Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts and the Corner Brook Royals.

The best of seven series will continue on Sunday with an afternoon game in the Western city, before the series shifts to the Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium in Grand Falls-Windsor next weekend for games (3) three and (4) four. Games (5) five, (6) six and (7) seven, if necessary, will be played on the weekend of March 13th.

Both teams have a rich history in Herder play, with the Cataracts winning the title a remarkable (12) twelve times and the Royals winning the first ever series in 1935 in addition to nine (9) more titles for a total of (10) ten. The Herder Memorial Trophy was first presented by the Evening Telegram Limited in honor of the hockey playing Herder Family, who founded the Evening Telegram in 1879. The trophy is emblematic of the All Newfoundland Senior Hockey Championship.

Hockey NL decided today to approve a request received on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 by the Central West Senior A Hockey League in which they asked to play for the historic trophy.

There is only one Senior A regional league registered this season in the province (Central West League) after the collapse of the Newfoundland and Labrador Senior A Hockey Provincial League this past summer. The Central West Senior A League and Avalon East Senior B League (the only other senior league in the province), did make a request to compete for the coveted title earlier in this calendar year, with the allowance of strengthening players for the Avalon East Senior B League champion to enhance competition, however, that did not materialize due to the extensive expenses associated with such a championship.

Tickets for this weekend can be purchased at the Civic Centre Box Office in Corner Brook.

The Telegram is provincial newspaper which is the people’s paper and is proud to continue supporting senior hockey in the province.
