Hockey NL announced today that the annual mid-season Minor Hockey Week will take place from January 14-21, 2017.

The kick-off ceremony at the Harry Ivany Arena in Botwood is this Saturday, January 14, 2017. The host association selected by Hockey NL is the Botwood Area Minor Hockey Association.  This central region minor hockey association has been a long-standing member of the provincial hockey association and offers hockey programs for 120 children.  (male and female)

The provincial slogan this season is “The Best Part of the Game, Is the Opportunity to Play…”.  Arnold Kelly, of Goose Bay, is serving his sixth (6) year as the Chair of Minor Hockey for the provincial hockey governing body and believes that all members need to focus on the message in this year’s slogan.  “This year’s slogan was developed to recognize that not all players are elite ones and therefore we need to provide the foundation for all players to enjoy the game and to instil a desire to play after their minor hockey days are finished”, said Kelly. “We would also like to acknowledge and thank the organizing committee with the Botwood Area Minor Hockey Association for their pledge to the celebration day”.  Kelly will be in Botwood to make the official proclamation this coming Saturday.

Jack Lee, Hockey NL President, of Goulds says Minor Hockey is important to each community.  “Hockey is vital to many communities in our province, and we need to recognize and thank all the volunteers in Newfoundland and Labrador who give so much of their time and energy to provide a fun and safe environment for our players,” remarked Lee.  “We encourage volunteer recognition during the minor hockey week”.

The Host Association will be presenting a ceremony this Saturday taking place 12:30 p.m. at the Harry Ivany Arena. Local dignitaries and hockey representatives will be in attendance for the ceremonies.  They are also hosting a Bantam and Female Under 12 invitational tournament all weekend with 8 travelling teams competing.
