Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador announced today that they will be celebrating the annual Minor Hockey Week in the province from January 12-19, 2013.
The week-long event will kick off in Baie Verte on Saturday, January 12, 2013. The Baie Verte Minor Hockey Association has been identified by the provincial association to host the kick-off and the local association is quite excited about that and have a number of activities planned over the weekend.
Believe… & Achieve ……is the slogan of the 2013 Minor Hockey Week in Newfoundland & Labrador. This week allows all forty-five minor hockey associations the opportunity to highlight youth hockey in their communities and recognize the contributions of players, coaches, volunteers, officials and sponsors in their organizations.
The Host Association will be presenting an Atom Tournament with four teams from the central area competing in the two-day event. There will be a meet and greet with Hockey NL dignitaries at 8:15 pm Friday at Copper Ridge Academy preceded by a town hall session with minor hockey associations in the area. It will be a sure fun-filled event on Saturday with an official opening ceremony of minor hockey week taking place 11:00 am at the Tommy Ricketts Arena in Baie Verte.
Jack Lee, Hockey NL President, and Arnold Kelly, Chair for Minor Hockey in Newfoundland & Labrador will be on hand to make the proclamation. Also look for a special guest appearance of Puckster, the official Hockey Canada mascot from Calgary! Hockey NL has planned a number of education sessions with players and coaches on Saturday to support the development of the membership.
“Believe and Achieve is the slogan and represents a message for all players to have a positive attitude when playing this great game and believe in themselves. Players, Coaches and other Volunteers who believe in their contributions to the sport and their personal plan, will impact others in the game in an encouraging way. We also want thank Baie Verte Minor Hockey Association President, Lori-Ann Sacrey and all of her volunteers for a tremendous job preparing this kick off”, said Kelly.
The President of the provincial association really wants the membership to set aside this week to celebrate the game. “Minor Hockey Week has been promoted by our association for many years to support our members in showing appreciation to those who make participation in Canada’s National Sport possible for our children. This game provides healthy exercise and teaches cooperation, team play and respect and we need to celebrate this regularly as we do”, remarked President Lee.
Hockey Newfoundland & Labrador is the governing body of amateur hockey in the province; promoting, supervising and regulating competition in all recognized categories. The association currently has over 12,000 registered players, coaches, managers and officials.
