It is with great sadness that Hockey NL announces the passing of the late James “Jim” Hayward on Tuesday, September 1, 2020, at the Dr. Charles LeGrow Health Centre at the age of 88.  Jim is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Born in Port aux Basques Jim was the son of the late Edward and Golda (Warren) Hayward. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his children, Barbara (Norman) McNeil, Garry (Dena) Hayward, Wayne (Alice) Hayward, Pamela (Paul) Mauger and Wanda Hayward, grandchildren, Tina, Sherry, Lisa, Shawn, Andrea, Brandon, Francis, Stephen, Patricia, Samantha, Hailey ,Chloe and Clifford; great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Corey, Chantell, Justin, Desmond, Brock, Lyndon, Trulee, Jeremiah, Beau, Mason, Gavin, Tye,Peyton,Erica and Elizabeth; great- great-grandchildren, Kaysen and Emerson; sisters, Lillian Howell, Emily Taylor, Beatrice (Edward) Duhart and Helen Simms, plus a large circle of nieces, nephews and many friends. Jim was predeceased by his wife Lucy May, son Louis, grandson, James Hayward, brothers, and Bertram and Charles Hayward.

Jim was well known as the ‘Grandfather of Hockey’ in Port aux Basques and was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Hockey Hall of Fame in June of 2012, after spending his life helping boys and girls in Port aux Basques become involved with hockey. Hockey was in his blood and provided him with lasting memories and friendships.

The family will be receiving friends and family on Thursday, September 3rd from 2:00-4:00 pm and 7:00–9:00 pm at Oceanside Funeral Home, 23 Read Street, Port aux Basques. Funeral service will be held on Friday, September 4th at 2:00 pm at St. James Anglican Church with Rev. Jane Allen officiating, interment to follow at St. James Anglican Cemetery.
