Hockey NL announced today a number of activities they are planning to coincide with the World Girls Hockey Weekend.   This weekend is a celebration of the female game in partnership with the International Ice Hockey Federation and Hockey Canada.

One of the primary initiatives is what they have labeled the “Long Game”  The idea is to celebrate the game of female hockey, unite Canadians in their efforts to grow the sport and provide grassroots programming from coast to coast that allow females of all ages to discover the sport, grow their skills and enjoy the game. The long game will be a serious of female games right across the nation.  The first game will begin right here in the province this Saturday said Bonnie Evans, Female Hockey Chair for Hockey NL.  “It will begin at 7 a.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2013 with an Atom Female Game in Mount Pearl, followed by a Pee Wee Female game in Grand Falls-Windsor, and at 9:00 a.m. a Bantam Female game hosted in Botwood, ending with a Midget female game held in Stephenville”.  All of the one-hour games will feature Red and White teams simulating Team Canada.  Games will follow in Nova Scotia and continue throughout the country ending in British Columbia Saturday night.  All the goals scored will be tallied to determine who wins each division, the Red or the White team.

Players participating in the Long Game will receive a Certificate as well as a patch to wear on their jerseys.  For minor hockey associations who do not have ice yet, they are planning other events to celebrate the female game such as volunteer and parent recognitions and off-ice activities.  Players, coaches and parents as well as the general public can follow all game results as they occur on social media.  Players can interact with other players throughout the entire day and events through twitter and use the motto “one game, one country.
