HOCKEY NL ANNOUNCES THE 2023-2024 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

Hockey NL is proud to announce the inductees for the 2023-2024 Hockey NL Hall of Fame, revealed Saturday, June 7^th, at our Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Gander, NL. This year’s class of inductees has made remarkable contributions to the sport of hockey, leaving an indelible mark on the game and their communities. We are honoured to welcome the following individuals into the Hall of Fame:

Tols Chapman Tols Chapman, from St. John’s, was a formidable goaltender whose career spanned two decades. He attended an NHL training camp with the Chicago Blackhawks in 1958 and won numerous MVP and goaltending awards between 1958 and 1976. Chapman played for the Fieldians, Junior and Senior Caps, and Memorial University, earning accolades such as Athlete of the Decade in the 1970s and St. John’s Athlete of the Year twice.

Ray Dalton Ray Dalton made a significant impact in senior hockey over 16 years, contributing to three Herder Trophy championship teams. Known for his playoff performances, Dalton led the Deer Lake Red Wings to four consecutive West Coast League titles and a Herder in 2007, later winning two more Herders with the CeeBees. His size, skating ability, and scoring prowess set him apart as a top player of his generation.

Terry Ryan Jr. Terry Ryan Jr. left his mark on hockey from coast to coast. Drafted 8th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in 1995, he remains the highest NHL drafted Newfoundlander. Ryan played professionally for seven seasons before returning to Newfoundland to play senior hockey, where he won a Herder with the CB Stars. He continued to contribute to the game, even playing with the ECHL Newfoundland Growlers at age 47.

Tracy Sullivan Tracy Sullivan is a trailblazer in women’s hockey, starting her hockey career at 14 and excelling at every level. She represented Newfoundland at the Canada Winter Games and captained the St. Francis Xavier University team to three consecutive Atlantic titles. Sullivan holds several team records at StFX, including most points in a single game, and has been a pivotal figure in the growth of female hockey in the province.

Ivan Hapgood Ivan Hapgood’s involvement in hockey spans over 50 years, both as a player and an administrator. Hapgood played a key role in intermediate hockey and has served as coach and GM with the Clarenville Senior Caribous, leading them to the 2011 Allan Cup National Championship. His leadership and dedication have significantly contributed to the success of senior hockey in Newfoundland.

Frazer Russell Frazer Russell’s dedication to hockey in Clarenville is unparalleled. His leadership and vision have driven significant growth in minor, high school, junior, intermediate, and senior hockey. Russell was instrumental in bringing the 2015 Allan Cup to Clarenville and has been a key figure in various community projects, including the construction of a new stadium. He also served as mayor and was named citizen of the year.

Andy Brake Andy Brake is synonymous with senior hockey on Newfoundland’s west coast. As the backbone of the Deer Lake Red Wings, Brake’s contributions as a player, coach, and executive spanned over three decades. He played a crucial role in the success of the Red Wings, leading them to multiple championships and serving in various leadership positions within provincial hockey councils.

Carl Lake (Posthumous) The late Carl Lake of St. John’s had a distinguished career in sports journalism, contributing significantly to hockey coverage in Newfoundland. Lake’s passion for hockey was evident through his work with various media outlets and his initiative to broadcast the Herder Memorial finals on the internet. His dedication to sports journalism and his legacy continue to inspire.

 

Hockey NL congratulates all the inductees and thanks them for their immense contributions to the sport. Their dedication, talent, and leadership have enriched the hockey community in our province and will be remembered for generations.
