CAPS AND JETS TO PLAY FOR JUNIOR HOCKEY SUPREMACY

The St. John’s Hickman Automotive Group Caps crushed the short-handed Bishop’s Falls Express 17 -1 in the second game of the 2013 Veitch Memorial Championships series being played in Stephenville on Friday night. The Express due to injuries and other commitments were down to just two-lines.
Robbie Hynd led the St.John’s Junior League champs with 5 goals, while Matthew Couglan chipped in with 3 goals, and Kyle McGuirk and Lee Gulliver both getting 2 goals. Other scores for the Caps were Chad Furlong, Alex Doyle, Joey Trenholm. Josh Thornhil and Jesse Parrell. Steven Best was the lone goal scorer for the Express.
Couglan with eight points on the night was awarded the Holiday Inn Player of the Game for the winning team and Ches Pelley received the honors for the Express.
The Championship Game to crown the 2013 provincial junior champs is now set for tonight 8:00 p.m. when the Host team Stephenville Jets play the Caps. The winner will represent NL at the 2013 Don Johnson Memorial Atlantic Championships in Moncton, NB later this month.
The Veitch Memorial Trophy was first played for in 1953 in which Grand Falls were awarded the trophy. The trophy was presented by the Buchan’s Social and Athletic Club in memory of John, Cyril and Phillip Veitch, for perpetual competition. This trophy is to be awarded to the provincial championship team in the highest category of junior. The trophy has been up for competition over 60 years and has been played 46 times.
