CARIBOUS EDGE CEE BEES IN GAME ONE OF THE HERDER

Harbour Grace, NL –The Clarenville Ford Caribous got goals from four different players to beat the Harbour Grace Ocean Enterprise Cee Bee Stars 4-2 in game one of the 2017 Herder Memorial Championship brought to you by the Telegram on Saturday night in Harbour Grace.   Mason Reid opened the scoring at 12:36 of the first period on nifty back hand to give the Central West Senior Hockey League champs a 1-0 lead. Ryan Desrosiers, Brandon Roach (power play) and Stuart MacRae (empty net) were the other goal scorers for the Caribous. Shane Boland and Jeremy Nicolas (short-handed) replied for the Cee Bees.

Jason Churchill earned the win in goal for the Caribous while A.J Whiffen suffered the loss for the Cee Bees.

Whiffin was presented with both the President’s and Gus Soper Memorial Awards prior to Game one as the province’s top goaltender and most valuable player.  Matthew Thomey of the Cee Bees received the S.E. Tuma Memorial Awards as the provincial top scorer. The Avalon East Senior Hockey League senior champ, Cee Bees were awarded The Telegram trophy as the best team in the regular season.

The best of five series will continue today with a matinee game at 2:00 pm at the Dan Cleary Harbor Grace Community Centre.  The series will then shift to Clarenville next weekend for games three, four and five, if necessary.

The Herder Memorial Trophy was first presented by Ralph Herder of the Evening Telegram Limited in honor of the hockey playing Herder Family, who founded the Evening Telegram in 1879. The trophy is emblematic of the All Newfoundland Senior Hockey Championship.  The St. John’s Capitals have won seven Herder titles and last competed for the coveted trophy in 1990.  The Cataracts are vying for their fourteenth Herder championship.
