NORTHERN SUBWAY SELECTS WIN TWICE TO IMPROVE TO 3-0 AT 2017 ATLANTIC MIDGET FEMALE HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP

Selects remain undefeated after the second day of the tournament

 

LANTZ, N.S. – The Northern Subway Selects are perfect after two days of competition against the top female Midget teams in the region.

The Pictou County-based Selects earned a pair of wins on Friday at the 2017 Atlantic Midget Female Hockey Championship in Lantz, N.S.

In the opening game of the day, Northern defeated Hockey New Brunswick’s Moncton Rockets 5-3. Madelyn Quinn and Patti-Anne Tracey each scored twice for the Selects and Julia Scammell added three assists to help pace the team to the victory. Goaltender Lily Currie stop 24 shots to earn the win between the pipes.

The Selects continued their winning ways on Friday evening. After trailing 1-0 to the host Pro Cresting Penguins after the opening period, the Selects scored six goals in the second period and never looked back. Katie Pentz led the way offensively for Northern, chipping in a goal and three assists in a 7-2 victory.

The host Penguins are still looking for their first win of the event after falling 6-4 to Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador’s Western Warriors earlier in the day. Western’s Emma Reid notched a hat trick and Brooklyn Childs picked up three helpers in the winning effort.

After playing a pair of games on opening day, Hockey PEI’s Mid-Isle Wildcats faced the Moncton Rockets in their only match-up of the day. Mid-Isle’s Taylor Gillis scored a pair of goals and Maggie Johnston made 33 saves in goal as the Wildcats won 4-1.

The 2017 Atlantic Midget Female Hockey Championship runs from March 30-April 2 at the East Hants Sportsplex in Lantz, N.S.

The winner of the Atlantic championship will represent the region at the 2017 Esso Cup in Morden, Man. The national championship runs from April 23-27, 2017.
