Grand Falls-Windsor, NL – Hockey NL is excited to announce the formation of its first School Hockey Commission, a new committee dedicated to overseeing school hockey programs across Newfoundland and Labrador. This Commission will provide important guidance, structure, and support to the province’s growing school hockey community.

Jill Monk, a teacher from Clarenville who was instrumental in introducing school hockey to her community, has been appointed as the program’s first Commissioner. She will work alongside respected board members Ruben Austin, Ken Gatehouse, and Victor March, each bringing their own expertise to the role. Ruben has been a leader in boys’ hockey on the west coast, Ken has managed the annual Royal Newfoundland Regiment Tournament, and Victor has made significant strides in expanding girls’ school hockey within the metro area. Hockey NL council liaisons Leigh Ann Ryder and Sara Taylor will also serve on the committee, providing additional guidance and support.

The popularity of school hockey in Newfoundland and Labrador has surged over the past two seasons, especially among girls’ teams. Currently, there are over 80 school teams ranging from junior high to senior high levels, with nearly 2,000 students participating across the province. Recognizing the need for a dedicated governing body, Hockey NL collaborated with Schools NL to build a comprehensive framework, including by-laws, rules, and regulations to ensure consistent and effective program management. This structure will better support volunteers who dedicate their time to organizing school-based hockey programs and tournaments.
