Home Ice Advantage: Team Atlantic’s Hockey NL Members Ready for 2025 U18 Nationals
As the 2025 U18 Women’s National Championship approaches, the excitement is visible, especially for some of the members of Team Atlantic who call Newfoundland and Labrador their home. Hockey NL is proud to spotlight three of its players, Marissa Dawson, Sophie Urquhart, and Katie Hurley, and staff member Kelsey Shute.
For these athletes and staff, this tournament is more than just a competition; it’s a homecoming and milestone for female hockey in Newfoundland and Labrador.
A Dream Realised on Home Ice
The chance to represent Team Atlantic at a national championship is an achievement in on itself, having the chance to perform in front of friends and family make it feel like nothing else and become an unforgettable experience.
“It’s a privilege to represent something bigger than myself,” said Katie Hurley. “I’ve always dreamt of representing the Atlantic provinces, and to do it at home in front of my friends and family is something I’ll never forget.”
For Marissa Dawson, the chance to play for her province again is a dream come true. “Excited is an understatement for what I feel to have a chance to play for the team and everyone who comes to watch. Newfoundland has such an incredible community and I can’t wait to see the atmosphere the crowd brings.”
Kelsey Shute, a staff member with Team Atlantic, echoed the sentiment, calling it an “incredible honour.” She added, “Having the opportunity to do it here at home, in front of friends, family, and our local hockey community, adds an extra layer of pride and excitement.”
Looking forward to the Spotlight
When asked about what everyone is looking forward to the most, the themes of community and growing the game were common among everyone.
Katie Hurley is eager for the high-level competition, noting the importance of visibility. “Growing up in Newfoundland I didn’t have a female role model who played hockey, so for the young girls to get that now… is definitely an inspiration.”
For Sophie Urquhart, it’s about showcasing talent and giving back. “This tournament alone will inspire so many young athletes and give them purpose. Overall I’m so grateful to participate in such a high-class event and especially back at home.”
Kelsey Shute is anticipating the electric atmosphere. “I’m looking forward to the energy that this tournament will bring… The buzz around women’s hockey right now is huge, and it’s great to see the game getting the attention and support it deserves.”
Inspiring the Next Generation
Hosting this esteemed event is seen as a vital moment for the future of female hockey in Newfoundland and Labrador. Everyone believes it will provide an occasion that will help this inspiration for hockey for young girls across the province.
“This event will help grow the support of the female game and bring to light what young girls are capable of, enticing future players to sign up and compete,” said Marissa Dawson.
Sophie Urquhart has already witnessed the growth firsthand. “When I grew up in minor hockey, there were typically 1-2 other girls playing with me. Now in Deer Lake there are over 50 girls in U9/U11 alone. Female hockey in Newfoundland is a growing game and the hosting of this tournament is a step in the right direction.”
Kelsey Shute sees the event as a catalyst for continued progress. “It shines a national spotlight on the talent we have… and will inspire young players to see what’s possible. There’s been a lot of great progress in women’s hockey here, and this event will keep that momentum going.”
The 2025 U18 Women’s National Championships is set to be a celebration of the sport of hockey, the community, and a bright future of women’s hockey. Be sure to come out and support Marissa, Sophie, Katie, Kelsey, and the entire Team Atlantic as they chase glory on home ice!
