Junior Coaching Program
The Junior Coaching Program is designed for young minor or female players who want to give back to their local Minor Hockey Association (MHA) by helping out on the ice. This is a great opportunity for players to gain leadership experience, contribute to their community, and earn volunteerhours for school.
Participants must be 13 years of age or older and may assist only as on-ice helpers—they are not permitted on the bench during games. Junior Coaches are able to work two divisions lower than the division they’re registered in. For example- A U15 registered player can work as a Junior Coach with a U11 team or below.
All Junior Coaches must:
• Be registered with their MHA.
• Wear full equipment for on-ice sessions, including a helmet with cage, neck guard, gloves, stick, skates, and track suit.
Transition to Coaching Certification
Once Junior Coaches turn 16 years old, they become eligible to begin formal coaching certification. They can:
• Complete the Hockey Canada Coach 1 through the Hockey Canada Learning Lab.
• Attend the Hockey NL In-Class Coach 1 Clinic during their respective hockey season.
At this point, they can transition into a fully registered coach with their MHA. and take on greater responsibilities within their teams.
