The contributions of Jack Casey as a builder within hockey in Newfoundland and Labrador fits those criteria to the upmost.
Jack’s involvement in hockey began as a player back in his hometown of Gander, where he also refereed and coached as a youth.
First elected to the Board of St. John’s Minor Hockey Association in 2003 as Vice President, Jack quickly moved into the role of President in 2004.
Under Jack’s leadership, Caps Minor Hockey developed into a formidable sports organization. While many can point to the long line of talented players that Caps Minor Hockey produced during Jack’s tenure as President, less attention has been directed to what Jack was perhaps even more proud of: the infinite number of recreational level players from all backgrounds that got a quality game of hockey at an affordable price due to Jack’s leadership.
When the Caps family of Mike and Jeanette Ryan lost their son Andrew to cancer in 2003, it deeply affected Jack. In response, he was instrumental in initiating the Andrew Ryan Memorial Peewee Tournament. The tournament would go on to raise an amazing $160,000 at the grassroots level for the Children’s Wish Foundation over its ten-year tenure.
Jack Casey has obviously sacrificed his social life many times to honor his commitment to minor and senior hockey. He has always set a very high standard and then delivered on it. He is the founding Board Member of the Doug Marshall Midget Minor Hockey League.
Member of the Board of the Avalon Arena Association, General Manager/Owner of St. John’s Caps Senior B Hockey Team since 2011and Founding Member of the Breakaway Foundation established by the HNL to help underprivileged kids to play hockey in our Province.
He was a part of volunteer organizations that attracted and delivered several successful national and international events to St. John’s, including the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, the Canadian World Junior Training Camp, the Women’s Four Nations Cup, and the National Midget TELUS Cup.
Jack has always got the job done and asked for nothing but respect in return. That’s his story; that’s his legacy.
