Joe Lane has been a jack-of-all-trades for the sport of hockey in Port aux Basques for over 40 years. Throughout his career, he’s spent time as a coach, an official, and an executive member at every level of the game, from minor through junior and senior, and into the female division. Along the way, he’s collected an assortment of awards and honours, including Hockey NL’s Brian Wakelin Award as Provincial Executive of the Year.

Joe began his lifetime commitment to hockey as a builder in 1980. He is synonymous with the name Channel Port Aux Basques Minor Hockey Association. He has served just about every position on the local association from President, Registrar to Public Relations. He coached, mentor and shaped many young hockey players that came through the system with his a positive and kind attitude. He coached both the local junior centennials and senior mariners.

Joe later, in 1990, became entrenched in the provincial officiating program and became the Western Zone Coordinator in 2003. He trained, assigned, supervised, and mentored many of the young officials in the western region of the province over the decades. He has worked as well overseen many officials for provincial and Atlantic championships.

Joe has received many accolades over his humbling career in hockey such as the RBC National Local Hockey Leader Award, Joe Byrne Memorial Development Honor Award, Wester Region Meritorious Award for minor hockey and the Ray Bowe Memorial Award of Merit for Officiating.

Joe Lane has done it all, and there is mural attesting his impact in the Bruce II Arena Multi-Purpose room in Port Aux Basques, rightfully named, the Joe Lane Multi-Purpose Room.
