Robin Short covered sports for The Telegram newspaper for 36 years; the last three decades as the paper’s Sports Editor. During that time, he helped tell the stories of some of this province’s greatest hockey history, from countless senior hockey league seasons through to the arrival of professional and major junior hockey to St. John’s. He was regarded as among the best of the best in minor-hockey coverage, culminating with him being honoured with the American Hockey League’s Ellery Award for excellence in journalism.
Robin covered all the professional hockey teams where he often delivered the color commentary for Rogers TV and VOCM for team such as the Fog Devils, St. John’s Maple Leafs, St. John’s Ice Caps and the Newfoundland Growlers.
He was dedicated to the journey of Dan Cleary becoming the first Newfoundlander and Labradorian to win a Stanley Cup.
He regularly produced featured profiles of the greatest hockey players in the province in the Telegram.
He served on both the Hockey NL and Sport NL Hall of Fame Selections as well as the City of St. John’s Athlete of the Year.
Robin, passed away in 2021, but his legacy remains.
He has been described by many of his colleagues and past acquaintances as bigger than anyone, more generous than anyone and now missed by everyone.
