Steve Cleary played 12 seasons of senior hockey with the Flatrock Flyers and one final season with the Conception Bay Cee Bee Stars. He was a six-time Avalon East Senior Hockey League Defenseman of the Year and won four Herder Memorial Championship titles.

He began his hockey beginnings with the highly touted Christian Brothers Celtic organization in St. Johns. Steve won three high school hockey Boyle Trophies and participated in three minor hockey Atlantic Championships.

He entered the St. John’s Junior A Hockey League in 1987 and played three seasons accumulating 28 goals and 73 assists for 101 points. Leading his team to two league championships and winning top defensemen of the year two of his three seasons and one Most Valuable Player in 1989.

Steve Cleary is one of the greatest defensemen to ever play hockey within the province. He was highly regarded for his rare combination of speed, offensive ability, particularly on the power play, and his defensive prowess and physicality.

Steve is remembered for his leadership, commitment to the game and the respect he had with teammates, competitors, coaches, officials and fans.

Steve Cleary was simply a player that was a joy to watch, game in and game out.
