The Port aux Basques Mariners won the 1989 Herder Memorial Trophy and the provincial senior hockey championship four games to two over the St. John’s Capitals in the final.
The Mariners advanced into the national B amateur playdowns for the Hardy Cup and, with six additional players from other Newfoundland Senior Hockey League squads, won the Atlantic playoffs three games to one over the Dartmouth Mounties of Nova Scotia.
Port aux Basques hosted and swept the Durham Huskies of Ontario in three-straight games to emerge as Eastern Canadian champions and advance to the national final.
The final, played at the Bruce Arena in Port aux Basques, had Joe West, Todd Savoury and Juan Strickland each score twice in a 9-5 win over the team from Kindersley Clippers from Saskatchewan. West and Dave McLay each scored twice in a 10-5 win in game two, and Strickland had two goals in a 6-5 decision that gave the Mariners a 3-0 lead in games.
After the Saskatchewan team won game four 5-3, Port aux Basques got two goals from Len Soccio and claimed the Hardy Cup with a 7-2 win that had the Mariners take the finals four games to one.
