ST. JOHN’S MAPLE LEAFS HEADING TO THE ATLANTICS
Grand Falls-Windsor NL, March 31, 2015 – The St. John’s Maple Leafs will be representing Hockey NL at the 2015 Major Midget Atlantic Championship being held in Kensington, PEI April 2-5. The winner of the Atlantic Championship will represent the region in the 2015 Telus Cup being played in River-du-Lou, QC from April 20-26, 2015.
The Leafs earned the right to represent the province when they won the 2015 NL Major Midget League crown on March 21st by defeating the Western Kings in the league finals.
The final series went six games with games five and six requiring three overtimes to determine a winner. Both games were won by the St. John’s team and showcased some great hockey.
Drew Stonehouse, in a scrimmage on top of the Kings netminder drove the puck home for the win and the championship banner at the 12:11 mark of the third overtime in game six.
Regulation ended in the knotted 2-2 score and it was off to overtime. There was lots of shots and lots of near misses but no one scored as the fourth came to an end and then the fifth. Over halfway into the sixth, Stonehouse got the puck, drove it home and the game was over.
Leafs Winning goaltender MacKenzie Janes stopped 56 shots for the win, while Luke House stopped 59 in the loss.
