🏒 Throwback Thursday
This week we look back at Mike Anderson, a respected player and coach whose hockey career spanned five decades and left a lasting impact on the game in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Born in Gander, NL in 1949, Anderson played 15 seasons of provincial senior hockey, including ten with the Gander Flyers and three with the Corner Brook Royals. He was part of the Flyers team that captured the Herder Memorial Trophy in 1969 and advanced to national Allan Cup competition, where he was named Gander’s most valuable player.
Beyond his playing career, Anderson made an incredible impact behind the bench. In 1986, he led the Corner Brook Royals to victory in the Allan Cup, marking the first and only time a Newfoundland and Labrador team has won Canada’s national amateur hockey championship.
For his contributions to the game as both a player and coach, Mike Anderson was inducted into the Hockey NL Hall of Fame in 2007.
