Today we’re highlighting Watson “Wats” Goobie – a true standout of Newfoundland and Labrador hockey.

Born in Bishop’s Falls, Goobie was known for his incredible scoring ability, quick hands, and exceptional speed. A natural offensive talent, he dominated the Grand Falls leagues in the late 1940s, capturing five scoring titles and earning MVP honours in 1951.

A key contributor to multiple championship teams, Goobie helped lead Grand Falls to a provincial title and Herder Memorial Trophy in 1953, and later played a major role in four consecutive Herder victories with the Grand Falls Andcos.

Beyond his skill, he was widely respected for his sportsmanship and gentlemanly style of play—earning admiration both on and off the ice.

Inducted into the Hockey NL Hall of Fame in 1998 (Player Category), Goobie’s legacy remains a lasting part of our game. 🏒
