Grand Falls-Windsor, NL – Beginning Friday, February 22nd, Hockey NL in partnership with Irving Oil will be presenting the 2013 Irving Oil Bantam AAA provincial play downs in Mount Pearl, NL.  The event features the best 13 and 14 year old players in the province and is hosted for the second consecutive year by the Mount Pearl Minor Hockey Association.

Six teams (Tri Pen Ice, Western Oil Kings, Central Icepak, Northern Huskies, St. John’s Ice Breakers and the Host-Tri Com Thunder) will compete in a single round robin tournament with the top two teams meeting in a championship game on Sunday at the Glacier Arena in Mount Pearl. The Tri-Com Thunder is the defending champs.  The winner of the championship will represent Newfoundland and Labrador at the 2013 Irving Oil Challenge Cup Atlantic Championships being held this year in Montague, Prince Edward Island, from March 21-24, 2013.

Two warm-up tournaments have been played and revealed a very competitive field.  While the Tri-Com Thunder and St. John’s Ice Breakers both came through with 7-2 records, the Tri-Pen Ice followed closely with a very respectable 5-3-1 record.  The Central IcePak and Western Oil Kings sported records of 2-6-1 and 2-7 respectively, but both squads feature impact players that are capable of changing the flow of any game.  The Labrador Huskies were 0-5 in the only tournament they played in – so they’ll be hungry for a couple of wins.

The Bantam AAA program is a development system for the provincial Major Midget League which features a provincial league for the top 15, 16 and 17 year olds who are vying for spots on Quebec Major Junior Clubs in the future.

Irving Oil has been a proud sponsor of Bantam Hockey in Atlantic Canada for twenty-two years and we look forward to their continued support in the future.
