The late Carl Lake of St. John’s had a long and varied career in journalism, starting in 1968 as a reporter for the Daily News. From there he turned his attention to television. He joined CJON-TV in 1972 and then moved to CBC Here & Now as a sports reporter in 1978.
For 20 years, Carl volunteered with Channel 9 in St. John’s hosting sports shows, ultimately hosting The AHL Tonight and other special sporting events.
Carl left the traditional media in 1995 to set out on a new path. He started the Sports Phone, an automated recording that brought callers information about local sports. Several years later, he moved to an online platform and started The Sports Page, which he administered right up to his passing.
Dedicating a life to sport brought him one of his proudest moments as the driving force behind broadcasting the Herder Memorial Finals for the first time on the internet. He volunteered his time to provide colour commentary for those games.
A lifetime of passion came through on those broadcasts and his love for hockey and other sports continued to the very end.
Sadly, Carl passed away in November 2020 but his legacy remains.
