They were the top two teams in the regular season of the Newfoundland and Labrador Senior Hockey League and now they will face-off to battle for senior hockey supremacy in the province.

The 2014 Herder Memorial Championships brought to you by the Telegram opens Saturday night at the Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium in Grand Falls-Windsor and will feature the Clarenville Caribous, winners of the east division and the Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts, representing the western division and the first place team in the regular season.  The Caribous took the Mount Pearl Blades out in five games, while the Cataracts swept the Western Royals in four games to win their respective semi-final matches of the NLSHL.

The best of seven series will continue on Sunday with an afternoon game in the Central NL community, before the series shifts to the Clarenville Events Centre in Clarenville next weekend for games three, four and five, if necessary.

Both teams have recent experience competing for the top prize, with the Caribous playing in the Herder Series the last two years, winning the historic trophy in 2012, while the Cataracts played in 2012 and 2011, taking the hardware in 2011. The Herder Memorial Trophy was first presented in 1935 by the Evening Telegram Limited in honor of the hockey playing Herder Family, who founded the Evening Telegram in 1879. The trophy is emblematic of the All Newfoundland Senior A Hockey Championship.

Hockey NL will be presenting a number of individual awards prior to Game 1 this weekend.
