Don Howse’s hockey career is filled with team and individual awards, exceptional coaching, and general leadership for those he played with and those he coached.
Included in the statistics for the Grand Falls native are 33 National Hockey League games with the Los Angeles Kings featuring two goals, five assists and seven points. His pro years boast two Calder Cup rings as American Hockey League champions with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs where he became the club’s all-time scorer with 253 points from 347 games. He had an AHL stint with Binghamton and played with Houston of the Central Hockey League and Greensboro of the Eastern Hockey League.
After exceptional minor and school hockey years in his native Grand Falls, Don Howse’s ability and high character earned him a spot with the Ottawa 67’s of the Ontario Hockey League from 1969 to 1972. He established himself as one of the top prospects coming out of junior hockey during that period and set out on his outstanding hockey career. Possessing fine team values, he displayed role-model sportsmanship and work ethics that led by example.
Don Howse won four Herder Memorial Trophies with provincial senior hockey championship teams from Grand Falls, Stephenville and Port aux Basques, and he was a very valuable member of the Port aux Basques club that won the Hardy Cup national ‘AA’ senior hockey title in 1989. He was selected provincial Rookie of the Year with Grand Falls in 1972, and had a nine-year provincial senior hockey career that spanned 222 games and included 122 goals, 261 assists and 399 points.
