Frank Finlayson began his Newfoundland and Labrador hockey career in 1959 and, during the next 15 years, earned considerable success and recognition for his performance on and off the ice.

After playing junior hockey in his native Nova Scotia, he was a member of the Buchans Miners’ team from 1959 to 1970, and a member of the club that won the provincial senior hockey championship and the Herder Memorial Trophy in 1963. From 1970 to 1973, he skated with the Grand Falls Cataracts who won the Herder in 1971 and 1972. He was a member of the Labrador City Carol Lakers who won the provincial intermediate championship in 1974.

A fast skater and excellent stick handler, Frank Finlayson earned a reputation as a playmaker who caused many goals to be scored. Always displaying desirable team-first tendencies, he was the 1969 and 1970 Most Valuable Player for the Buchans Miners, and emerged as the Grand Falls Cataracts’ Most Valuable Player in 1971. An indication of his ability to score important goals was evident when he scored the winning goals in the Herder Memorial Trophy final games of both the 1971 and 1972 seasons.

Frank Finlayson was a gentlemanly player who performed with finesse during a very colorful career with Buchans and Grand Falls. Always giving his best in every game, he possessed great skills and earned the respect of his peers as well as fans and officials. He was one of the main reasons that the Buchans Miners were able to ice very strong competitive teams during the period of time that he was a member.
