For Immediate Release

Grand Falls-Windsor, NL-   Hockey NL announced today that the Minor Hockey Week in the province will take place from January 11-18, 2020.

Clarenville Area Minor Hockey Association will be this year’s host association.  They have arranged a kick-off ceremony to be held at the Clarenville Eastlink Centre next Saturday, January 11, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. The host association- Clarenville Area Minor Hockey Association was selected this year by Hockey NL.  The association has 300 registered players between five (5) and seventeen (17) years of age.

The host association has had a difficult 2019 with the passing of two young minor hockey players in their community and its hopeful the celebration of the game next week will be a positive event for them.

The Host Association will be presenting a cake cutting ceremony and conducting a proclamation next Saturday, and has also organized their annual Atom Invitational Tournament for all of their categories.   The association is also planning education sessions with all these players aged 9-10 attending the tournament that is focused on bullying awareness and prevention.

The provincial slogan this season is “You Never Lose, You Either Win or Learn”.  Arnold Kelly, of Goose Bay, is the Chair of Minor Hockey for the provincial hockey governing body and believes this is a very important message.   “Development and not necessary the concept of winning should be at the forefront of all programs”, said Kelly.

Kelly’s challenge to the hockey membership is to work with a common goal that is in the best interest of all, ensuring a learning atmosphere within a safe and inclusive environment.  Kelly’s message coincides with their National Sport Organization (Hockey Canada) recent campaign that was launched during the start of the World Junior Hockey Championship, “Make Hockey More”.

The week events will continue after the kick off that will see tournaments, skills camps and clinics as well as try hockey settings.  For a complete list of events please visit http://www.hockeynl.ca/calendar/
