MINOR HOCKEY WEEK TO BE CELEBRATED IN NL FROM JANUARY 13-20, 2018
Hockey NL announced today that the annual mid-season Minor Hockey Week will take place from January 13-20, 2018.
The provincial slogan this season is “The Game is Better.. When We Are In It Together”. Arnold Kelly, of Goose Bay, is the Chair of Minor Hockey for the provincial hockey governing body and believes that this season’s message suggests that we need all of our stakeholders striving towards a common vision. “We want to promote team objectives and that so much can be accomplished when we are working together on common goals, rather than individual agendas”, said Kelly.
The kick-off ceremony this year is held at the Polar Centre in St. Anthony next Saturday, January 13, 2018. The host association selected by Hockey NL is the St. Anthony and Area Minor Hockey Association. This northern peninsula minor hockey association has been a long-standing member of the provincial hockey association and offers hockey programs for 130 children. (male and female)
The Host Association will be presenting a cake cutting ceremony and conducting a proclamation formality on the 13th, while they host a Novice Jamboree for boys and girls participating from nearby minor hockey associations- Straits and Twin Town. They also have plans for a skating event for all of the registered members of their association.
Kelly is appreciative of all of the work the host minor hockey association is doing to deliver this event. “We would like to thank the organizing committee with the St. Anthony and Area Minor Hockey Association for their pledge to the celebration day”. The Minor Chair will be on hand to kick off the week’s celebration in St. Anthony and is excited about the Novice Hockey tournament. “One of the new initiatives this year is mandatory half ice hockey games for players in Novice (7-8 years) to target skill development, fun and competition. This is a change in our structure from the traditional full ice games at this young age that we believe will benefit the membership in the long term”.
The week events will continue after the kick off that will see many tournaments, development camps, try hockey settings and female programs throughout the province. For a complete list of events visit hockey http://www.hockeynl.ca/calendar/
Hockey Newfoundland & Labrador is the governing body of amateur hockey in the province; promoting, supervising and regulating competition in all recognized categories. The association currently has 45 minor hockey associations and over 12,000 registered players, coaches, managers and officials.
