Grand Falls-Windsor NL – The St. John’s Maple Leafs will be representing Hockey NL at the 2016 Major Midget Atlantic Championship being held in the new CBS Arena in CBS, NL from March 31st to April 3, 2016.  The Leafs beat the Western Kings in the league finals for the second straight year on Saturday night in Mount Pearl by score of 4-1 to win the best of seven series in six games.

Danny Rice opened the scoring for the two-time defending champs in the first period and George Young of the Kings responded to tie the game at one after forty minutes.   But the leafs pulled away in the third stanza with goals from Tim Noble, Cody Langmead and Tyler Planetta (empty netter) to seal the victory and the championship,

Leafs Winning goaltender MacKenzie Janes stopped 26 shots for the win, while Luke House stopped 36 in the loss. Maple Leafs forward Kyle McGrath was named playoff Most Valuable Player.

The winner of the Atlantic Championship this weekend, that will also feature the host St. John’s Privateers from this province, will represent the region in the 2016 Telus Cup being played in Quispamsis, NB from April 18-24, 2016.

The Major Midget provincial league features five teams and showcases the best 15, 16 and 17 year old male hockey players in the province and is a development program for Major Junior and Junior A hockey.
