Dawson Creek, BC, 7 November 2012  – Team Atlantic had a great first game against Ontario Red but fell short losing the contest. An early lead for Ontario Red was enough for a 2-0 shutout win Wednesday afternoon over Team Atlantic, with the defending champions first victory at this year’s national championship.

For both squads it was a strong start in Dawson Creek, with Team Atlantic netminder Rebecca Weagle (Lunenburg, N.S.) facing 39 Ontario Red shots, and her teammates skating hard from first puck drop to final buzzer to keep the score close. Ontario took the gold medal for its seventh straight national championship title last season, while Team Atlantic finished in fourth at the 2011 National Women’s Under-18 Championship in Saguenay, Quebec.

Ontario Red scored at 17:11 in the first, with a power-play opportunity to go up 1-0. Ontario Red scored again about a minute and a half later to make it 2-0 at the end of the period. Despite falling behind in the first, the Atlantic Canadians held their ice through two periods to keep Ontario Red at bay. It was a fast-paced game sure to entertain any hockey fan, and was an exciting sign of what’s to come here at the EnCana Events Centre.

Team Atlantic’s Rebecca Weagle received player of the game facing 39 shots. Team Atlantic managed to only have eight (8) shots on Ontario Red’s goaltender.

Team Atlantic’s next game will take place Thursday November 8th at 4:00pm (MST) against Saskatchewan.
