Grand Falls-Windsor, NL-   Liam Hickey, 14, of St. John’s, was invited last week by Hockey Canada to attend a National Development Junior Sledge Hockey Team Camp from February 26-March 3, 2013 in Montreal.

Hickey, who plays with the NL Sled Dogs, is expected to be the youngest player attending the camp.  The camp will feature the top prospects in Canada and the young sledge hockey player from NL has been on the radar by Hockey Canada coaching staff.    These events are the first step in selecting National teams who represent Canada in International Championships as well as preparation for the selection of the team who will represent Canada at Paralympics Games.

Liam has been playing sledge hockey now for four seasons and has developed into a fine player.  Jack Lee is the President of Hockey NL, and he hopes this accomplishment will grow the game.  “First, on behalf of Hockey NL, I wish to congratulate Liam and NL Sled Dogs program on this feat, we are quite proud of Liam and wish him the best in his future.  We hope that this will inspire more youth to take up the game of sledge hockey”, said Lee.

Hockey NL currently has one league of twenty players participating in the province located in St. John’s.  Both Hockey Canada and Hockey NL are in a position to grow the numbers of Sledge Hockey participants in the province and encourage both able body and physically challenged persons who are interested in the game to give it a try.
