For 14 years, Frank Walker was a very valuable member of the Buchans Miners’ hockey team in provincial senior championships. Playing during an era that featured a multitude of star performers, he more than held his own as an outstanding puck carrier who had speed and great mobility to support his scoring talents. He was an aggressive player who earned great respect for his success along the boards and in the corners. This skill allowed him to set up his teammates for scoring opportunities.

His Herder Memorial Trophy career started in 1955 and continued until the late 1960s when a shoulder injury curtailed his playing. Walker played a major role in the 1962-63 success that had Buchans win the Herder Trophy. Using a very good backhand shot, during the finals that season, he scored six goals and earned seven assists for 13 points against the Corner Brook Royals. In addition to the 1963 title, he was a valuable asset to the Miners who were always deep in the race for the playoffs and the provincial crown.

An individual who worked hard and gave his all on every shift of a game, he was well liked and well respected by his teammates and coaches. Fans in the various NAHA rinks could always count on him for a solid performance and this made him popular at home and on the road. Walker was one of the top-level players who made the provincial senior hockey league the popular success that it was during his career.
