George MacLaren owns an outstanding career as a hockey play-by-play announcer with more than 1,000 junior and senior amateur games and more than 300 professional broadcasts to his credit. Bringing an unbiased and extremely knowledgeable expertise to his VOCM microphone, he provided his listening audience with vivid and enjoyable factual descriptions of games from all over Newfoundland and Labrador as well as mainland Canada as he earned an extremely high level of respect from listeners and hockey people alike.

His Newfoundland and Labrador hockey-broadcasting career started in 1965 and continued to 2002. For 37 years he was regarded as the real provincial voice of hockey, possessing an incredible amount of detailed knowledge about the league and its teams and especially about the players. He shared very interesting facts and statistics about each and every player and each and every team. He simply knew the hockey he described extremely well and devoted the time and energy necessary to be very, very well prepared for each and every game.

For hundreds of thousands of hockey fans, George MacLaren was their source of hockey information, first provincially and then with St. John’s Maple Leafs American Hockey professional hockey. Always willing to give his opinion in a fair manner, he was more than equal to the task of both role
