Ed Philpott, a fast, quick-thinking forward, was a member of three teams that won the Herder Memorial Trophy and the provincial senior hockey crown. He skated with the Gander champions in 1969 and 1980, and was a member of the St. John’s Blue Caps who won the Herder in 1978.

He put 46 goals and 80 assists together for 126 points in 30 games to win the 1978-79 provincial senior hockey scoring crown. During his eight-year career, he played 251 games with 173 goals and 286 assists for 459 points, 14th on the all-time provincial senior hockey scoring parade.

Philpott’s career started at the minor level in 1960, and he moved into senior competition when he was only 16. He was offered a junior contract by Halifax Junior Canadiens and later could have played with the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Tulsa, Oklahoma farm club, but declined both offers.

He played with Galt Hornets and Whitby Warriors while stationed with the RCMP in Ontario.
