Merv Green put an extremely productive 12-year hockey career together as an award-winning goalie from intercollegiate competition to St. John’s senior play to provincial senior hockey. As a member of St. Bon’s and St. John’s Capitals, he was the prime puck stopper during his playing days.

After breaking into senior hockey as the replacement for the great John Doyle, Green was a member of eight teams that won the historic Boyle Trophy and St. John’s senior hockey titles. On six occasions, he won the Hamlyn Memorial Trophy as the top goalkeeper in St. John’s senior hockey.

He was the first local goalie to wear a mask, starting in 1959, as he was selected as netminder for the St. John’s Capitals seven times. He was voted Most Valuable Player in St. John’s hockey for the 1959-60 season.

A dedicated athlete, Merv Green was a very agile goalie who responded well to pressure and earned the confidence of his teammates. His netminding was a major attraction during the early years of the St. John’s Memorial Stadium.
