A tall, rangy power forward, Jim (Bucky) Hannaford was an exceptional player who possessed great natural talent to go with a determination to success and to provide his team with his best performance possible. An accurate passer and playmaker, he was very dangerous in front of the goal with the ability to score often and well. His career was overflowing with personal and team achievements.

He won the provincial senior scoring title twice and was selected as the league’s Most Valuable Player twice. He was the first player to reach the 300-point plateau and had more than 200 goals prior to completing his career. In 1958, he combined with Orin Carver and Clobie Collins for a line record of 95 points, and had individual games of eight and five goal performances. He was captain of Grand Fall’s teams that won six provincial championships.

His ability and dedication earned him a 1950-51 tryout with the Quebec Citadels, a farm club of the New York Rangers. Hannaford played during an era when talented hockey players were the norm rather than the exception, and he continually demonstrated that he was equal to all of them and better than the vast majority. He was one of the best five or six hockey players the province has ever produced, and was a standout performer during his school days in Bishop’s Falls through his senior play in Grand Falls.

Hannaford was an all-star baseball pitcher and was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame in 1982.
