Bruce MacDonald made a valuable contribution to hockey, especially in central and western Newfoundland, in a 34-year career as a sports announcer that was highlighted as play-by-play announcer for 13 seasons of provincial senior hockey. He was the play-by-play man for CKCM from 1963 to 1976 and reported sports, including plenty of hockey, with CBC from 1976 to 1987.

In addition to his popular coverage of local and provincial hockey, he was the man-behind-the-mike for national Allan Cup playoffs involving the Grand Falls Cataracts in Ontario, 1971 in Galt, ’72 in Barrie and ’81 in Thunder Bay. He called numerous Herder Memorial Trophy playoffs within Newfoundland and Labrador.

A member of the hockey hall of fame selection committee for two years, he served on the Grand Falls Cataracts executive. Often master of ceremonies for a variety of hockey events, his hockey involvement earned him many appreciation awards.

A deep and detailed knowledge of hockey in general and players and team situations were the foundation upon which he constructed a well-regarded and impressive broadcasting career that was extremely beneficial for the sport. He developed a close friendship with hockey people at all levels, provided accurate and unbiased accounts and was regarded as a very fair commentator by players and fans in every hockey center of the province.

Bruce MacDonald was simply a good hockey person.
