Charlie P. (Charlie) Cahill was educated at St. Bonaventure’s College in St. John’s and excelled in hockey, which brought him his greatest measure of prominence and acclaim.

His hockey debut locally came in 1925 as a member of the St. Bon’s team in the St. John’s Senior League. He was later transferred by the Commercial Cable Company to its New York branch where he played with the Manhattan YMCA team in Madison Square Garden, then the home rink of the New York Americans, the second American-owned team to enter the National Hockey League. Team scouts were impressed by the talent of Cahill who, by now, was making a name for himself as a hockey player in minor club competition.

New York Americans’ managing director Tommy Gorman invited Charlie Cahill to tryout with the professional team and he was offered a contract to join the New York Americans’ farm team in Buffalo. Cahill rejected the offer.

In 1929, Charlie Cahill was transferred back to St. John’s just as his old St. Bon’s team had finished the 1928 season by winning their first senior championship and its first spot on the Boyle Cup. He did not rejoin his old club, but allied himself with the Terra Novas, leading that club to the senior hockey championship in 1929.

Charlie Cahill continued to play for the Terra Novas through to 1932 when he hung up his skates. There is no need to attempt to embroider Charlie Cahill’s career as a scintillating player. The fact that the management of the New York Americans recognized his on-ice capabilities is sufficient an imprimatur.
