Frank (Andy) Cahill enjoyed great success during a hockey career that started while he was a student at St. Bonaventure’s College, and lasted until he played St. John’s civil service hockey with a team from St. John’s City Hall. His prowess, at an advanced age, amazed former NHL player and coach Howie Meeker a great deal.

An exceptional playmaker, Andy Cahill starred for any team for which he played. He was a member of five St. Bon’s teams that won the Boyle Trophy for the St. John’s title and five Herder Memorial Trophies as provincial champions. On three occasions, he earned the Most Valuable Player award in St. John’s senior hockey and was selected for six St. John’s all-star teams that played teams from mainland Canada.

He was considered by many to be the finest hockey player to wear a St. Bon’s uniform. Hockey was his main sport, but the very sportsmanlike athlete excelled in a variety of other sports and was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame in 1978.
