Carl Hansen was an extremely important and valuable figure in provincial and Corner Brook minor hockey, and in the building of hockey facilities in Western Newfoundland.

While he was manager of the old Corner Brook Arena, he was vitally involved in building the new Humber Gardens, filling several important positions on the committee that was successful in the construction of a modern ice facility. In 1954, along with committee president Jack Marshall, he was successful in obtaining a government interest-free loan of $100,000 and, at his own expense, visited several areas in Eastern Canada to gather information necessary for the operation of Humber Gardens.

From the very start, he was involved in the financing and building of Humber Gardens, and, later, in the operation of the facility. Elected Gardens’ president in 1961, he worked for the facility until 1972. In 1956, he was instrumental in forming the Newfoundland Arenas Association.

Carl Hansen was the organizer and leader in the establishment of provincial minor hockey. The first provincial pee-wee hockey tournament was held in Corner Brook in 1959 and was organized by Carl Hansen, who also supervised and coached minor hockey. When a provincial minor hockey association was formed outside the Newfoundland and Labrador Hockey Association, he was the first president, a position that he held until 1965.

Carl Hansen gave freely of his time, and Corner Brook as a city, and Newfoundland as a province, have benefited greatly from his valuable and varied contributions.

He was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame in 1975.
