Bill Scott has earned all the good things that are associated with his brilliant hockey career.

From his 1944 intermediate days with the St. John’s Royals to his exceptional career with the Buchans Miners until 1963, Scott was a credit to his sport, his team, his community, his family and, most importantly, to himself. A very talented and intelligent defenceman who always exhibited the utmost in sportsmanship, he led by example and earned respect from all those associated with him in hockey.

Often captain, he was a valuable member of the Buchans’ teams that won the Herder Memorial Trophy and the provincial senior hockey title five times during his 15-year stint with the club. In fact, he is the only player who was a member of all five Herder-winning squads in Buchans.

Scott moved to Buchans in 1948 after playing senior St. John’s hockey with the Royals, Hurricanes and St. Pat’s. His outstanding performances on the Buchans’ blueline made him an instant favorite with Miners’ fans, and he contributed greatly to the Buchans success in 1950, 1951, 1952, 1954 and 1963. His overall contribution to hockey in Buchans includes coaching at the minor, school, junior and senior levels.

He played for a winning Buchans’ team in the 1951 all-star series in Grand Falls, and was picked up by Grand Falls to play exhibition games against the New York Rangers during the NHL club’s 1951 tour.

Scott has the distinction of scoring the first goal in the Prince of Wales Arena in St. John’s.
