Sam Rose began a 30-year commitment to hockey, mainly minor hockey, in 1966. His contributions were especially important and beneficial to minor hockey in Port aux Basques where he was president of the association from 1970 to 1976. It was during this period that he provided the leadership for the establishment of a solid minor hockey program, and instigated a developing junior hockey system for graduating players. Regarded by the local residents as “a magnificent hockey personality”, Rose appeared to be always present whenever anything to do with minor hockey was in progress.

In 1976, Rose assumed the position of Western area director of the Newfoundland Amateur Hockey Association’s minor council, and fulfilled the duties of this position very successfully for 14 years. His foresight, interest, expertise and work was extremely valuable in the expansion and improvement of hockey within the area for which he was responsible. While his hockey involvement began in 1966, it is interesting to note that he was coordinator for the last minor hockey tournament held at the old Bruce Arena prior to it being destroyed by fire in 1995.

Sam Rose’s exemplary work for hockey has been recognized, particularly his work as a minor hockey builder. In 1975, he received the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association’s award for outstanding service and, in 1987, he received the Newfoundland Amateur Hockey Association’s Gold Stick award, marking a decade of leadership as a provincial executive member. During the 1980s, the Port aux Basques Minor Hockey Association named a minor hockey tournament his honor.
