During a 19-year competitive hockey career that started in a junior high school league in 1953 and ended in provincial senior action in 1971, Doug Squires established himself as one of the best left wingers to be produced in Newfoundland and Labrador.

An extremely strong skater with a low center of gravity, he supported exceptional stickhandling, passing and shooting with great personal determination. Unselfish when he had the puck, tenacious in the corner and along the boards and agile and quick around the goal, Doug Squires was a valuable asset to every team with which he played.

Earning more than his share of personal awards and playing for many first place teams, Doug Squires performed within St. John’s hockey until 1963 when he moved to Gander. He spent four seasons skating for the Gander Flyers in provincial senior hockey.

During 13 seasons of provincial senior competition, Squires played 258 games, scored 160 goals, drew 251 assists for 411 points and served 144 minutes in penalties. He is 24th on the all-time points list.

His Herder Trophy year came in 1970 after he returned to St. John’s and played a major role in the first senior title showing for the Caps since 1948. He was the team’s top point getter with 26 goals, 36 assists, 62 points and 26 penalty minutes in 31 games.

After one more season with the Caps, he retired from competitive hockey.

In 1985 during 50th anniversary celebrations of the Herder Memorial Trophy, he was voted an all-star and in 1999 he was selected in a Telegram feature as one of all-time best provincial senior forwards.

A tough competitor but a good sport winning or losing, he added greatly to the popularity of hockey during the time that he played competitively.
